Las Manitas Avenue Cafe Austin Reviews
Las Manitas, an Austin Institution May 16, 2008
Las Manitas means "little hands" and is the name given to this restaurant by the two sisters who founded the restaurant and still own it today. Open only for breakfast and lunch, its a great place for cheap but good Mexican food and to catch some of the "Keep Austin Weird" crowd. They have a diner style cafe in the front, and a patio with picnic table seating in the back. To navigate between the two, you walk right through the middle of the kitchen, where cooks, waiters and bussers are scrambling to make it all happen.
Breakfast at Las Manitas is awesome. They have traditional dishes like huevos ranchero (fried eggs with a spice red chile sauce), breakfast tacos, migas (scrambled eggs with chiles and tortilla strips), and chilequiles roja or verde. For lunch, try the enchiladas. Las Manitas has a wide variety of enchiladas to try, from traditional to more unique. One of my favorites is served on Fridays -- shrimp enchiladas that are awesome.
To drink, try a traditional "agua fresca" -- horchata, jamaica, and limonada are my favorites.
