Lanyon Historical Estate Canberra Reviews
A country walk through history Jun 02, 2011
Lanyon Homestead is a magnificent example of Canberra's heritage and one not to be missed! The homestead itself has been beautifully restored and has a real atmosphere of opulence and wealth but having said that there are also servant's quarters and examples of how the convicts lived too. The tour around the home was interesting and the guides are very friendly and take you through all of the rooms with great knowledge and enthusiasm. Because it has such historical significance, you are not allowed to take photos of the inside of the home like the bedrooms and living area. All of the tour guides are volunteers and so they really put their hearts into it.
Cost is $7 for adults or $15 for a family. The have this thing called concession, which I have no idea what that means. Although I felt it was a bit pricey, you could begin to grasped what it must have been like in years past. To this day, they still graze sheep and other animals on the property. There are plenty of outbuildings available to explore.
There is also a cafe on site which has great food - we enjoyed a great lunch of pumpkin and vegetable soups, traditional bread called Damper and some great atmosphere. The food was really tasty and the portions generous. They serve breakfast lunch and dinner. The wine selection is really great and so were our servers. They even let me take a photo of them working in that awesome little kitchen. There is also a nice little gift shop on site which has some interesting items.
There are lovely well-kept gardens you can wander through and we saw some people bringing picnics out in the cool fall weather. I really enjoyed visiting Lanyon and would go back again as well as recommend that anyone in the area stop by for a great day in the Canberra area. It is fun and interesting for the entire family.
