YD6 - Where the Wharfe is young Oct 30, 2010
The Upper Wharfedale bus finishes at Buckden but the Wharfe can be followed up considerably further. However the Dale changes its name to Langstrothdale. It actually starts somewhere near the tiny settlement of Beckrmonds on Camm Fell but quite what the relationship is between Oughtershaw Beck and the Wharfe at its source I am not sure,

The infant Wharfe flows down to the small village of Yockenthwaite, where there is a fairly impressive stone circle and the delightful village of Hubberholme, with the George Inn and a great little church (St Michael and all Angels - reviewed) into Buckden, where the road crosses to the left bank just before the village.

The part of the Wharfe near Yockenthwaite is a delight for children. It's easy enough to take a picnic down to the river from parking beside the road. In the river there are smoothed limestone boulders and numerous children have tried to create dams by joining them.
