Prior to this trip, I was in Reykjavík in 2002 and this exhibition was an archaeological excavation site. Now a very state-of-the-art museum, this is an excellent example of modern-day preservation of historical sites. The centrepiece of the museum is a preserved ruin of one of the first houses in Iceland and findings from other excavations around the area.

Around the ruin, interactive multimedia screens (in various languages)present various scholars' theories on the life and times of the first settlers in Reykjavík. Via a wireless handset, the commentary discusses these in a passionate and emotional way that I have never quite come across in major museums in other cities such as London or Paris. This is what really made the museum stand out for me. Nevertheless, the three-dimensional interactive screens, and the excellent quality of the small-scale models of what the ruin may have looked like are second-to-none. I much prefered this museum to the Saga Museum at Perlan.

Highly recommended, best museum I have enjoyed anywhere in the world for a long time.
