An Ice Cave and a Volcano Mar 21, 2009
Just outside Grants, NM, just south of I-40 is the Land of Fire and Ice. For $10(USD) per person, you can take a self-guided tour around a volcano and into and ice cave. The volcano tour is a gradual and easy walk around the cone. You have a map that explains things along the way. Then there is a nice viewpoint of the crater. The volcano hike takes around 40 minutes there and back. The ice cave tour walks you through the lava fields. The map also explains things along the way. Once at the cave, you walk down a set of stairs and enter the cave. You only stand on a platform and view the cave rather than walk around it. It's around 30 degrees(F) in the cave, so you may want to bring a jacket. The cave tour only takes 20 minutes there and back. There is a gift shop you can walk through too. This is a nice way to get out of the car and take a break when you've been doing that long, boring I-40 drive. It's worth a stop.
