Today I was scheduled to travel to Lalibela where I hoped to see the famous rock-hewn churches. I had read that Ethiopian Air did not always adhere to their schedules and this day was no exception. After hanging around the airport for an extra three hours we finally boarded our flight headed for Bahir Dar. This hour or so flight was uneventful and upon landing the plane filled with passengers headed ultimately back to Addis (via Lalibela). However, no sooner was everyo…

Believe it or not, the most amazing churches in the world MUST be here in Lalibela, Ethiopia. King Lalibela spent 23 years building (or should I say, "carving" eleven churches straight from the earth's granite hillsides. Imagine going to Yosemite and just start carving into the earth - making churches. It is an unbelieveable sight to see. St. George's church is the most mezmerizing church I have every visited. It is in the shape of a cross. &nb…

Today, we did an excursion to Yeremhana Kristos, a monastery of about 1000 years. It is built inside a cave and at the rear, is a collection of about 6000 skeletons of pilgrims who have died there. There were some skulls in the floor of the cave as well ... you could easily stub into one thinking it is just a bit of rock.

3rd October 2005Lalibela, 300km north of the capital, is known as 'Africa's Petra'. It's attractions are its rock hewn churches - 13th century churches carved down into sold rock from above. They are amazing. Each one is still a working church and inside the dark corridors, rugs cover the floor. Incense is burning. Each church has its own resident Priest, dressed in robes and holding huge centuries old crosses made out of solid silver. The majority of Ethiopians are Orthodox Christians, and sti…
