Lake View Tourist Guest House Anuradhapura Reviews
Lake View Tourist Guest House Sep 15, 2011
The name of this place is somewhat misleading - when a guest house call itself Lake View - you sort of expect to be able to see - well a lake. But that’s not the case of this place - only from the terrace in front of one of the rooms on the first floor can you kind of catch a glimpse of the lake through the trees - which for me doesn’t really qualify the place to the name Lake View.
If you can live with the fact you can’t see the lake from Lake View - it is actually a pretty nice place to spend a couple of nights in Anuradhapura if you are in town to see the ancient city and the nearby attractions. The hotel is fairly big with more rooms than the average guest house. All the rooms got a private shower and toilet - but not all have got hot water. In the climate you got around Anuradhapura it doesn’t really matter much to me considering the cold water isn’t really cold and a hot water shower won’t really fell all that refreshing after a hot day out at the ruins of the ancient city. Just keep in mind the price difference on rooms with and without hot water isn’t very big - only 200 rupees - which is just under $2.
When you stay at the guest house you can rent bikes so you can use them to go and visit the nearby ancient city or go to Mihintale a few miles down the road. If you want to go to the ancient city you should definitely rent a bike because the distances are just simple too large for walking. Unfortunately the bikes are a bit small - which was a problem for me - and the first bike the owner decided to put up the saddle sufficiently high so it actually were perfect for me - unfortunately this was above the maximum height the saddle pole could handle and it collapsed under me when I used the bike - at least they didn’t charge me for the broken saddle.
You can have breakfast, dinner and lunch at the guest house in a small dining area if you like - and the food is quite nice. You are generally asked to specify what time you want dinner - which is an advantage since you will not be waiting for the cooks to prepare your meal at night.
If you want to use the internet you can do so in the host private apartment - the price is a bit higher than the standard rate at most internet cafes around Sri Lanka - but it isn’t much higher and I couldn’t really find any place to use the internet in town.
There are a bit of wildlife around the guest house - particularly monkeys which will come close by especially in the morning. The monkeys are probably attracted by the fact some of the staff seems to be feeding them on a regular basis. At least the monkeys weren’t trying to go inside the dining area and steal the food off the plates.
