Lake Te Anau Reviews
TeAnau Fishing Mecca Aug 31, 2014
I often stay in TeAnau and use it as a base for my Fiordland adventures
The accommodation while not cheap is reasonable for a town that relies on Tourism
Warning, it can get cold here as in any part of the lower South Island
Rain plays a big part of life around TeAnau and it can rain days without stopping.
I often look at the forecast and if rain is predicted for the next few days I will just pack up and leave the area.
For me this is the heart of fishing.
The Waiau river starts at TeAnau, and if the river is not too high the fishing can be good.
Towards Milford Sound there are several rivers, the best known being the Eglington.
For me if the river is not too low the best fishing is in walking distance from the town. Just 10 minutes walk towards Milford is the Upukeroa river, or Upuk as it is know to the locals. There is great fishing to be had here with the right river level.
Saying that the last few times we have been to TeAnau we have not bothered fishing it.
We often stay at the Lake View Holiday park which is opposite the Upuk river.
It is slightly out of town so if you don't want to be bothered by the nightclub scene this is a good place for families.
