Cute Park, But Campsites Stink Sep 10, 2011
The first thing you notice about the campsites at Lake Sylvia State Park is that they offer no privacy and your tent is practically next to your neighbor's on their site. Because no bushes or low trees are between the sites, bright lanterns hit you in the eyes and there's nothing to act as a sound barrier, so noise really travels.
I happened to be camping beside the family from hell. Lantern on full blast with a fire blazing until almost midnight...something one can deal with, but the noise is another issue.
Quite hours are supposed to be between 10pm until 8am. The people in the site in front of me were up late signing and talking loudly well after quite hours. Normally I'd enjoy listening to the singing, but the kids next door were screaming and crying loudly while their parents yelled and cursed at them. I no sooner would drift off to sleep and they would start up again!. Then, at 6am, a logging company start up their saws and were cutting down trees! Who does that at 6am on a weekend? Of course, that noise woke up the kids, who started screaming and crying where they left off the night before!
There was also a very foul smell near the bathrooms in the early morning...smelled like sewage had backed up.
If you're not planning on camping there, the park has a small beach and swimming area that is roped off from the lake (and boat traffic). The foot bridge and trail to the dam were nice...and no kids were at that end, so it was peaceful. Tons of blackberries were ripe, so it was a good spot to enjoy a treat while reveling in solitude.
