Lake Placid is a uniquely attractive locale to visit, winter or summer. Well known as the host of Olympic games, of course, Lake Placid boasta great bobsled, luge, skiing, and skating facilities. The downtown hip village runs around small Mirror Lake, whichis popular winter and summer - in winter they build a great sled hill right in the middle of the frozen lake.
In town food and accomodations max out at 3 star - but its a very family friendly town, with enerally friendly locals. Nearby are a couple of outstanding resorts that run from the times of the great Adirondak homes of the robber barons. The Lake Placid Lodge is a gorgeous Relais & Chateaux resort, well worht a visit at least for dinner if not to sat a few wonderful days. Theere was a devastating fire there in 2005, but rebuilding of the main Lodge is underway. Lake Placid will be great in any season depending on your interests. In warmer weather the surrounding area is a mecca for rock climbing, canoing and fishing in the unending lakes and streams. In winter there is Whiteface Mountain, for some of the best alpine skiing in the Northeast (truly). Interstingly, although Lake Placid is in New York State, you can see more Cnadian visitors than Americans because of its proximity to Canada (only an dhour and a half to Montreal). The 6 hour drive from New York City is tough for a weekend, but given and extra day or two its a pleasure.

Lake Placid, New York, USA -› -› ...
We woke up early and found the trailhead for Algonquin Mountain. I believe it was the Macintyre trail that leads to the summit. The trail was only moderately strenuous and the views from the top are well worth the hike. We stopped and had lunch at the top. This is when I found out I am allergic to something in an energy bar I ate (maybe flaxseed?). It certainly made the hike out unpleasant, especially since we did not return the same way we came. Istead, we...
