Lake Outlet Holiday Park Wanaka Reviews
Ok holiday park close to the lake Dec 27, 2010
Check-in: The campground was booked a few weeks in advanced through their online booking site. The campsite originally allocated to us had nice views, but due to the strong winds, we requested a more sheltered site. We were told that if we wanted a nicer site the next day to come by and make a change.
Location: The campground is located 6km outside of Wanaka and is accessible by a unsealed road, although it is only about 1km unsealed.
Facilities: There is a kitchen area with benchtops running along both sides with a long table in the middle. There are a few stove tops, a kettle and a microwave. In the women's toilets there are three showers and four toilets. The campground was quite busy while we were here and I saw people waiting for the showers. The showers are included in the price and they get quite hot. The shower head was quite low in the ladies side so being 5'5" I had to bend down to rinse my hair. There are also a couple washers and dryers. Internet is accessible through wifi (must pay using credit card) and there are also computers available.
The drinking water is sourced directly from the lake and is untreated. We ended up buying a large 6l bottle from the town's grocery store. We were told later by locals that there is a free tap near town with free spring fed water.
Campsites: There are lots of trees creating mini sections of campsites. So we shared a cleared area with one other camper. This was a nice improvement compared to other campgrounds that just line campers up next to each other. We were neat to a pathway leading towards the facilities so we had people walking by, which was a bit annoying late at night when we were trying to sleep.
Overall experience: The campground was ok but coming from the beautiful settings of some of the DOC campsites, this was mostly a place to stop for a couple nights, get a hot shower and charge our electronics. The kitchen area was too small for the amount of people. Although with sunnier weather more people would have been sitting outside on the many picnic tables available.
