Lake Lodge Guesthouse Killarney Reviews
Clean, Cosy and Hospitable Hosts. Nov 13, 2010
I wanted a nice trip for my guy as his birthday present. It was meant to be a surprise trip but that bugger managed (always...don't ask how but it is unbelievable) to find out what his surprise was before his birthday! I couldn't decide where to go either Italy or Ireland.
Anyway, I chose Kerry, Ireland because the flight was much cheaper and everyone speaks English there. Whatmore, my guy hinted that renting a car would be much cheaper than in Italy. Spendings would be expensive too!
Well, I bought the RyanAir plane tickets NRN-KIR and looked through Booking.com site for the 'ideal' accommodation. I'd went through many and since I was on a budget, I tried to look for one that had many good reviews and was money worth. What more a good locality. Finally! I came across Lake Lodge Guesthouse in Killarney. I chose Killarney instead of Tralee because it is closer to nature and pretty much is on the way to Ring of Kerry. Many good reviews about delicious Irish breakfast and how nice and friendly the hosts were. They were also very helpful and that the rooms were very clean.
THE GOOD POINTS:
- 50 Euros per night, breakfast included
- A room for two, King size bed
- Clean rooms, made everyday
- Able to watch TV
- Soap & Shampoo provided, towels too
- Well furnished bedroom and bathroom
- Good service
THE BAD POINTS:
- Tasty but REALLY greasy Irish breakfast
- Slow WiFi
- Small Bathroom
- Big chunky room tag with old-fashioned keys (to the main and bedroom)
- Awful timed-heater
- No painted 'boxes' for the parking lots
ABOUT THE BREAKFAST
Breakfast: you get to have not a wide spread (cereal, yoghurt, jugs of apple and orange juice, platter of whole fruits, slices of hams and cheese) OR you choose to have the Irish breakfast, whereby there's a grilled half tomato, sauteed champignons, pan-fried two slices of blood pudding sausage and sunny side up eggs (two) and other greasy stuff. Toasts provided and jam and butter are already on the tables where you're seated. Irish breakfast can be nice but it isn't what I would call it a cholesterol friendly meal. It was as though oil was free...yup, you do see the champignon 'swimming' in oil on the plate.
You can't really sit freely at whichever table you like. Sometimes they will tell you where they prefer you to be seated even when there are tables free/available. One occasion, they put us next to another couple. We could see that they felt rather embarrassed and so did we. We tried not to mind about that but I must say that it is my first time having to come across that.
The hosts are really helpful and friendly (except the husband and wife should really learn how to smile more since they're in this service). I could tell that it is run by a family, sometimes you might notice the son. The father is the one who cooks the Irish breakfast and the mother (she seemed rather Goth but she's really nice and friendly and for her to look like that at her age is rather, WOW and unique) will be the one serving the guests. There is another man, short and he seemed to me a little like there's some Italian roots in him? Or perhaps some Indian roots? For me, by far he's the friendliest and nicest in the house. in fact, it was our first day and we were planning to rent a car (because we told him about it back in the Guesthouse). He spotted us walking in Killarney and he approached us (he was probably on his lunch break) and showed us where BUDGET the car rental was. He tried to contact the man who was working for BUDGET as the shop was closed. He managed to get in touch with the man and made an appointment for us. That was really nice of him.
BOOKING A TAXI for departure...
If you need to book a taxi to go to the airport on the date you're departing, you can let them know in advance (like we did...we arrived there and asked if it was possible for them to book a taxi for our departure date) and they did.
THEIR KNOWLEDGE ON KERRY...
Asking questions about Killarney, they aren't really good with them and bad at recommendations. All they could do was point out to you their stacks of brochures and magazines (not neatly stacked). When you asked about food, they're not spot on for recommending which cafes/restaurants to go for. Don't bother asking for recommendations, best to rely on are your travel book like Lonely Planet AND of course TravBuddy OR TripAdvisor! If you have friends there (in the country), that would be AWESOME!
THE CORRIDOR & ROOMS...
What can I say? Thin walls. On our third night, here comes the Dutchmen, talking loudly in the middle of the night. It was as though they wanted the occupants to know they'd just arrived. I'd read complains of the walls being rather thin as occupants were able to hear their neighbours. Some complaint about the bathroom being too small and bedrooms too small that they can't place their luggage. Actually for us, what matters were, the cleanliness, the big bed and the comfort and of course...necessities provided (towels and toiletries) and good services. If you're with a big luggage, OK...be prepared to climb the flight of stairs (not high anyway but it is narrow) and you can just take your clothes and hang them (hangers provided) and place your luggage upright in the room. Thus, you get space to walk...because my guy and I, we travelled there with just one handheld luggage and we still have enough space to walk.
ABOUT THE BATHROOM...
I agree that it is small but the good thing is that we were staying there for 5 nights. I'm small size so I didn't mind it but for any person to be really tall and huge would find it difficult to move about in the small bathroom. Anyway, it is not that bad and not as small as I'd expected (after reading the reviews) and in fact easyHotel in Sofia...the bathroom was even small than that! I'd done a review on that and posted photos, you can feel free to check that one out.
MAKING THE ROOM...
The rooms get made everyday and no, they do not provide signs such as 'DO NOT DISTURB' and 'PLEASE MAKE UP ROOM'.
It is a timed heater! It is on from 5PM to 9PM and then it'll be off! Oh my! What happens when it is winter? The occupants are going to freeze! Yup, we felt cold in the bedroom and I found a way to keep myself warm before bed was to have a really hot shower and then tuck myself under the quilt. It did help at some point but we didn't like the idea of the timed heater. They need to do something about it. We had to go down and tell them to turn on the heater when we're cold. We went in late October, if you're wondering...
It was slow...thus, my guy ended up using his MiFi which was slightly faster.
It is just a 15-20 minutes walk to the centre of the city. It isn't too bad...so it was located just right.
THE PARKING LOTS...
They should really learn to paint some lines on their parking area (thus, occupants will follow and park in that painted 'box'). Occupants tend to take for granted of the space and being ignorant for others. They don't make use of the space wisely thus we had to find another place to park, which was behind the guesthouse and it is squeezy getting to that place.
To sum it all up, it is a nice place to stay in and we were rather satisfied with everything except the timed-heater. If we were to visit Kerry again, I would most likely say we would have our accommodation here again (I hope they'll do something about the heater). It was a nice B&B place and I would recommend it but I believe that there are some rather good ones nearer to the centre. If you have more $$$ of course, stay in a hotel hehehehehe...
