Lake Charles Overview

Lake Charles is a decent sized city of just under 74,000 (up 2% since 2000) located along Interstate 10 in Calcasieu Parish in Southwest Louisiana. It is also on the shore of a couple of lakes (including Lake Charles that lead to Calcasieu Lake. Lake Charles has a few good schools of hogher learning, is active in petrochemical processing and a decent tourist destination. The town started in 1861 and has a colorful past that includes pirates, swindlers, thieves and some "good" folk. It was originally known as Charleston but changed the name shortly afterwards. Mich of the downtown area was destroyed in 1910 by a huge fire. Lake Charles is the parish seat of Calcasieu Parish. Calcasieu Parish was established in 1840 and had several seats before Lake Charles was chosen. Calcasieu is an Atakapan word meaning "Crying Eagle".The Calcasieu Parish Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Lake Charles has a nice historic district with several buildings of historic and/or architectural interest. It would have many more if they had not been destroyed in the 1910 fire. Lake Charles has a couple of districts and 11 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the best examples of architecture in Lake Charles are in the Charpentier Historic District

Lake Charles has all services and is a good place to visit.
