the world's deepest lake Aug 09, 2004
I first saw lake Baikal from the train. Between Irkutsk and Ulan Ude, the train goes along the southern shore for several hours. The view is breathtaking. If you buy trans-siberian tickets from a travel agency abroad, make absolutely sure you do this stretch by day.

Lake Baikal is the oldest and deepest lake in the world. And also one of the coldest, I would guess. I thought I would go for a swim, but when I went to Gremyachinsk, on a daytrip from Ulan Ude, I just dipped my toes in and that was enough.

The lake is really beautiful. I regret not having had the time to travel around it, the daytrip was all I had. The shore was really quiet in Gremyachinsk, I only met a handful of others, all locals I think.
