Laguna San Rafael Vacation Guide

The San Rafael glacier is the northernmost sea reaching glacier on the southern hemisphere. The 1.7 million hectare National Park was created in 1959 to protect the glacier as well as the huge ice sheet that covers the Patagonian Andes in this region.

The park is only accessable by boat or plane, which makes a visit either time consuming or expensive. That said, it is well worth a visit, as the sight of huge icebergs floating in the sea, and the sheer glacier wall are a good second-best if you are not able to go to Antarctica.

Modified freight ships take passengers to the Laguna and back on a weekly basis from Puerto Montt or Puerto Chacabuco.

Originating from the melting of the eternal ice fields, the lagoon tells of the planet’s past. In the midst of the silence of the stillness of its waters and the majestic spectacle of floating icebergs, Laguna San Rafael impresses travellers as an emblem of pristine nature. http://www.navimag.c…
