The Blancs Moussis and confetti Mar 22, 2009
Laetare is held in Stavelot on the fourth Sunday in Lent (22nd of March in 2009). It is a huge festival in a tiny town - a quarter of the population is in the parade. Most of the parade is what you would expect in a parade - themed floats and marching bands - but the end is unique to Stavelot. The Blancs Moussis march in their white robes and their blank faces, throwing confetti at people (or pouring it down their clothes), hitting them on the head with inflated pig's bladders or hitting them with a dried herring on a stick. When you add the final floats with confetti canons, blowing out literally tonnes of confetti, it is a huge riot and enormous amounts of fun.
