Gallery, formerly a school. Aug 15, 2010
Almost due east of Scotland's Coldstream, the little villages of Etal and Ford, in Northumberland, England can hardly be called well known. Yet this gallery is a real gem.Louisa, hte Marchioness of waterford was the owner of Ford estate in 1860, when she commissioned this building.

She was something of a philanthropist and this was the school for the children of the village right up until the 1950s. The estate website, http://www.ford-and-etal.co.uk/ford-and-etal/todo/listing.php?a_id=5 claims that there were once 134 children on the register. i believe it but it's hard to believe if you go there now.

The marchioness took great interest in the school and painted many murals to illustrate bible stories - getting local people to model for her. many pictures of her work and of other attractons of this aea can be seen on http://docbrown.info/docspics/northeast/nutpage20.htm
