La vuelta a Oriente, The East Road Trip, Guarne Reviews
La Vuelta a Oriente... The East Tour. Apr 21, 2010
If you've ever been in Medellin or ever pass by the Jose Maria Cordoba Airport in Rionegro, you will heard about "La Vuelta a Oriente"
A picturesque road trip though the most charming towns in the near East of Medellin and all starts in Guarne.
Driving 20 minutes away in the Medellin-Bogota highway you will find this lovely town where you find the folk and food that will make you feel part of the family.
The people of Antioquia, the "Paisas" as they called themselves are the nices and friendliest people, caring, loving and honest they will be happy to change their way to make you feel at home and help any stranger if they see that you are lost or need directions, don't be surprised if they take you to your destination and leave you with a smile and a big hug.
Guarne is famous for its kindness, its wine and its Arepas, that I highly recommend to eat in any restaurant by the road highways as the locals do. Arepa is a type of corn bread that is eaten in the whole state as breakfast as well as a snack and as replacement of bread with all the meals. It is best with butter and "Quesito" witch is a cheese very similar to mozzarella but a bit saltier. My favorite arepa is: "Arepa de Chocolo" that is made of sweet baby corn and is Delicious !
Guarne is located in top of the central Antioquia mountains, right on top east of the "Aburra" valley, where Medellin is located. The ride up the mountain is super easy and safe, more now with the new highway that connect all the close East villages to the city.
You will find: "El Alto de la Virgen" where the virgin Maria appeared to a local man in order to bless the area and make it better. It is a famous religious getaway for the believers and you will find any religious souvenirs there.
Also you will find the "Parque Ecologico Piedras Blancas" that is an Ecological Reserve administered by Comfenalco and is part of the "cuenca videographics" and Park Piedras Blancas. its services include: accommodation for 32 people and 119 people camping, food, restaurants in 80 people and point of sale 200 people, Ecologic paths, gazebos, project adventure, grill kiosks, museum entomologist, and 2 auditoriums with a capacity of 50 persons each.
Another new Ecological trip is the "Cable vuelo" that is a Zip Lining park in Piedras Blancas area.
La Capilla de Santa Ana is a Catholic house of worship under the name of Santa Ana, right outside the center of the town that has a colonial style and technique, but is not the colonial period, although it is unclear the exact date of its construction is estimated to have been built in the mid-nineteenth century, possibly in the 1860-1870 decade. The temple is a simple building with a rectangular plan, gabled roof, the interior is divided into three naves, separated by wooden pillars. At present, the chapel was declared a National Monument on October 20, 1987. It is from another time...
The "Bosques de la Mayoría" (Forest of Mayoría) Located south west of Guarne can be reached by car or Hike. by the old Hippodrome Road, Vereda Honda, the Mayoría area is an Ecological attraction for tourist that come here to make picnics Colombian style that include a big pot and pan with lots of food and drinks, but also just for walks and enjoy the water. This place is really likable for its green grass and rivers side camping.
To end the tour before going to the other towns of the East of Medellin I want to tell you about the: "Laguna de Guarne"
Witch history is based on popular myths of the region, Guarneños have become a tourist attraction and every person who listens this story is forced to visit the Lake. It is located in Regional Park Arví and is a beautiful lake stopped in time where you will feel the peace and the strength of my land and my people of Colombia.
After you discover this treasure town you can drive towards Marinilla and Rionegro where you will find the International airport Jose Maria Cordoba and Tutucan a old representation town created as a enjoyment park for the tourist, do not miss it. Then back to Medellin by las Palams" the sight seen route to the big city, it is a beautiful drive. The whole trip wont take more than a few hours (2 or 3, it depends on you).
But if you have the whole day, keep driving East after Guarne towards the "Represa Guatape y el Peñol" that is a very large hand made lake that has one of the main attractions in the East the famous Peñol Rock, this monolith of 200 meters high has 679 steps to reach its peak, from there you can enjoy a 360 degree view of the lush beauty of the reservoir Guatape and neighboring lands that you can enjoy boat tours, boat bar or enjoy a delicious fish trout... But this will be a different Blog.
Enjoy it when you go ... !
