La Villa Marseille Reviews
Simple salty food in a very expensive restaurant Jul 22, 2015
N43°16.372' E5°23.462' on 3rd place on Tripadvisor’s list of best restaurants in Marseille was Alexandre Mazzia restaurant in April 2015. They would not answer the phone and would not return our voicemail message. Unaware to us they received their first Michelin star and we received the accompanying impersonal Michelin star treatment asking for a table: "No, we are fully booked four months in advance and we don't listen to our voicemail anymore". We went for our spare choice La Villa and it looked from the outset a good choice. Even better, when an Australian waitress took our reservation with a polite Aussie accent. She booked a table inside this big restaurant, not outside in the tent or on the terrace under the open sky.
Returning for dinner, they took us to a different table inside the tent. We hesitated but agreed in the end. A massive mistake as we soon realised our new table was next to the main route between the restaurant and the terrace. The traffic of guests and staff members next to our table was intensive. Gone was the setting for a nice dinner.
We ordered risotto with asparagus and mixed fish on toast (crab, white fish, coquille) with Sancerre Daniel Ducroux white wine. The wine was good but lacked character. The risotto was too heavy and too salty. Not balanced and too loud. The fish dish was nicely prepared, but the toast was very salty. Service was rushed. No attention spend on the guests
Overall La Villa did not meet our culinary expectations, taken their hefty price of €106.30 in account. For this money, we expected much finer French culinary cooking. The failure to accept the wrong table was on our part. With two mistakes in one evening, we skipped dessert. Not recommended at all.
