Baboon's gate:famous for its legends! Aug 08, 2010
In around 1364 at a village fete was a particularly street acrobat disguised as a bear.He was called Babouin (French for baboon) but perhaps it was only his nickname?
Suddenly the alarm bell rung out because the lord's house was on fire. The lord was away fighting against some English or Burgundian. His wife and daughter were trapped.Babouin bravely grabbed a ladder and protected by his bearskin saved the ladies under the eyes of the crowd. He was ennobled and the lord gave him his daughter's hand in marriage...and a wooden statue of the brave acrobat was built and erected above a town gate, the porte du Babouin.
Five centuries later the time and bad weather had ruined the statue and in 1839 the town council decided to remove it with a new Babouin one.A party of town councillors fetched in Lyon the statue and, after numerous drinking sessions and feasts came back to Chazay with a statue of..... a Centurion. You can see it above the Porte du Babouin!
