Every last Wednesday in August, the little town of Bunol, Spain hosts the World's Largest Tomato Fight. Bunol is located about 25 miles outside of Valencia. It's accessible by train early on that Wednesday but be prepared for locals to tell you to take a different train as they want the seats for themselves.

We arrived around 8:30AM and positioned ourselves in the middle of the town square. There are all kinds of things going on early (drinking for us) but the tomato fight doesn't really get going until 30 minutes after a Ham is cut down from the top of a 30-40 foot high greased pole. Yup. When the fight is ready to begin, 6 huge trucks with a total of 200,000 lbs of tomatos will come down this small street, raise the back of the truck to dump the tomatos and then move forward. It's on after that. Probably one of the most memorable experiences of my life. Try it.

Starting early on a Wednesday morning people gather in the little town of Bunol under the August heat. The locals gather and lather a 10m tall wooden pole and stick into the ground with a large ham on the other end. It's up to everyone nearby to climb the pole to touch the ham. The first to touch it signals the trucks to come down the narrow street and release the tomatoes.

What ensues is a chaotic fight of sloppy tomato juice and goggled mayhem as everyone is a victom to one of the great daytime parties of the year. Residents then lend a hand to hose you down but expect to repeat this process at least three times as tomato pips have managed to find a hiding place in every crevasse from the spot between your toes and in your hair
