La Pilareta Valencia Reviews
Terrific Tapas in Historic Bar Jul 19, 2009
My friends in Valencia, Juan & Gena, took me to the legendary tapas bar & restaurant called La Pilareta (Bar Pilar), which has been around since 1917 in the Barrio del Carmen. This is a neighborhood populated bars and night clubs near the historic center of Valencia. Nothing fancy about the place, but it has some old world charm. It's a narrow bar/restaurant with the bar on the right as you enter and some tables to sit at on the left side. It fills up quickly at peak hours, making for a somewhat cramped, but lively atmosphere.
The food is inexpensive, authentically prepared with time honored recipes and quite delicious. One of the specialties is the 'clóchinas' (small steamed mussels in a juicy broth). These mussels are native to the area when in season from May to August. Other tapas to try include 'Pescaditos' (little grilled fish) and 'Alcachofas' (artichokes). For a taste of Valencia and mixing with the locals, La Pilareta has some terrific tapas and cozy vintage charm worth experiencing.
Check out their website, which is very good, and available in English with menu, historical info, and photo galleries of the bar/restaurant and tapas/portions. Link - http://www.barlapilareta.es/en
