La Pentolaccia, which means large broth pot in Italian, is located a short walk from the main Erice square, Piazza Umberto, up Via Gian Filippo Guarnotta, and is near the San Rocco Cafe a short distance past the Ettore Majorana Centre. This building is part of an old monastery, many of which existed in Erice at one time. The stone walls and wood beam ceilings add some ambiance to the restaurant, and there is a small outside balcony too on the 2nd floor dining area, but only large enough to accommodate a few diners. Peering over the wall affords some nice views of the stone streets below.
The sign which is hung outside everyday says “Oggi Cus Cus”, which means Couscous Today. This restaurant has some of the best couscous in Erice and it is a generous portion often served best with fresh white fish on top. Couscous are little balls of wheat, cooked by steaming and served with meat, fish or vegetables. This is one of the Arabic influences in Sicily, but Sicilians have adopted it as their own and call it cuscusu. This dish is a meal on its own an La Pentolaccia is a great place to try it in Erice.
