On Saturday, we met Michael (morle) a little late, after the folk festival of Friday’s nigth, and went to lunch but this time barbacoa because Michael as the previous day proved a "Hot assortment" (see A tour by La Paz)
Our trip was a citytour by various neighborhoods of La Paz, even the first c…

It was the third day of the civil unrest, and my fifth day in La Paz. In an attempt to force the Bolivian government to improve life for the Bolivians, farmers and students had organised a series of protests. By blockading all major roads in the country they literally brought the entire country to …

This was an interesting event. Every year the students at the universities around la Paz have this parade. Essentially each major or dicipline learns a traditional bolivian dance, and then masters it, get together a costume, and do this parade. They also have musicians busting out…

BUS JOURNEY
What a nightmare!! The roads were awful, the bus had no air-con and it was roasting, the bus had no toilet and it was tiny!
We eventually arrived after 14 hours of hell and checked into a Hostal for more well earned sleep.
DAY 1
Planning on booking a trip to the salt flats today. We…

Well I woke up at 3:30 am to catch my 6:45 flight in Santiago this morning. I got yelled at by the security guard in our hotel and I thought he was going to call the police because as he was yelling at me he had his hand on the phone the whole time. Apparently, he was in the bathroom wh…

Every three months there is a birthday lunch at the orphanage for all the girls who have had a birthday in that time. For obvious reasons, it´s not practical or possible to celebrate the birthdays of all the 120 girls on each of their days. So they combine them and have a big lunch and…

Hola! Been a bit busy since I got back from the jungle. I had another couple of days in Cusco, where I saw some of the sights that I didn't get to before the Inca Trail and the Jungle. I went to Sacsayhuaman and a few other Inca sites on an organised tour, the guide wasn't very inspiring and I thin…

Nuestra Señora de La Paz ( Our Lady of Peace) – that’s the whole name of the Bolivian administrative capital. A beautiful name for a chaotic metropole at 3600 meters above sea level with a charm on its own we were supposed to experience by ourselves soon enough. The city looked like a cooking …

ANDREI - I knew all along that I would be spending my 30th birthday South of the Equator, away from my best friends. An ominous milestone and I was a tad worried it would not live up to what I wanted it to be. I was 50% correct.
The day started with a 90 Sole phone call from Puno (Peru)…

Sunday in La Paz was nothing like I expected! With the Catholic influence I assumed all would be in church like they do in so many other places. However, with the extreme poverty level, these beautiful people are not able to take hours out of their business time for mass. Which is also when I reali…

We left Copacabana on the 'tourist' bus at 1.30pm (note, the local bus is cheaper and takes the same amount of time, so don't get conned into paying over the odds for this, which is Bs25 compared to Bs15 local) and it was an eventful journey to La Paz. after about an hour we were abrutly told…

We woke with the intention to visit the museums in La Paz since we have been here so long and haven´t bothered (I´m telling you, the ice cream is too good)!
We headed towards Plaza Murillo about midday, and the main streets were crowded with protesters. There were seriously thousands and thousan…

There´s only so long you can handle places like Loki, a somewhat infamous chain of hostels in Peru and Bolivia that appear to exist solely to profit from getting backpackers hammered. You know exactly what you´re going to get; basically a huge party from start to finish. I spent 6 nights there wh…
