La Omaja Hotel Ometepe Reviews
Moderate and modern accomodations on Ometepe Jan 20, 2013
I spent three nights here in January, 2013. Accommodations are in separate cabins, most with two queen beds and some with a single queen. Excellent for families and couples. All have bathroom with shower, cable TV, AC, and ceiling fan. The rooms are nicer than they appear in the website photos, and are very clean.
The hotel has the only pool on the island, although it's small and not really made for swimming. Mainly good for cooling off or watching the sunset.
The restaurant/bar is a large structure open to the air on three sides and having a high ceiling. Rooms, taxis, food and drinks are on a tab system that you pay before leaving. Beer is quite inexpensive. The food is very good but somewhat more expensive (e.g., 150C/6$US for a hamburger with fries or chips. It's a large burger though, on a sesame bun with lettuce and tomato. American breakfasts (eggs, fried potatoes, pancakes, bacon) are good. Food is served from 7am to 9pm, and the bar stays open later. Free Wifi is provided at the restaurant, but the signal doesn't reach the cabins.
The place is owned by an American expat from Omaha, hence the hotel name. He speaks fluent Spanish, but other than him the help are pretty weak with English. Still a little sign language and a few words of Spanish make up for any issues.
