La Mortella gardens Forio Reviews
Beautiful gardens on the hills of Forio! Aug 02, 2011
One of the most important English composers of XX century, William Walton, lived here from 1949 and this garden was created by his Argentinean wife Susana.
They commissioned well known landscape architect Russell Page, who designed the garden and planted wonderful tropical and Mediterranean plants. He added fountains, pools and water streams to allow the cultivation of various water plants like lotus flowers and others.
La Mortella, the place of the myrtles, is divided into two parts, lower garden (the Valley) and upper garden (the Hill). Two levels are linked by stairs and paths, but after climbing to get to the top level you are awarded with stunning views of the bay of Forio.
There is a museum that has various memorabilia of the composer, photographs and even a puppet theater featuring characters from Walton's works.
Different sections lead you to great discoveries. There is an Orchid House (bring extra 1EUR to enter), Thai Pavilion on the Hill, Victoria House full of tropical flowers, Greek Theater where you can watch a show or concert, Bar and Shop with great views, and many lemon trees, fountains, sculptures.
You need 12EUR to enter, and about 2 hours to explore the gardens. They give you a really good and useful map at the entrance. You can also download it from their site.
