The best café in Brussels Feb 23, 2007
One of the best bars or café's in the central Brussels after my taste is the "La Mort Subite" - The bar is one of the old brown café's as they call it down here.

La mort subite - "until the sudden death" is a place that is rich on the real flavor of Brussels. It reminds me of one of these places where they parked trains in the old days. The walls are yellow - I don't know if they are coloured that way or if it 75 years of smoke.

It is truly a fantastic place and don't cheat yourself for a big big glas of Grimbergen Blonde - they taste more than wonderful here, but remember after number five you are on your own. These monster beers are really kicking:D

The service is always kind, smiling, friendly and very quick. If you want to do what the locals do here, then order "a mixed" - it´s a plate with sausage and cheese choped in small pieces - and you take them with a toothpick and dip them in strong mustard with a large dash of peper.

One thing you will see here, which I seldom see in Copenhagen - is women ordering beer after beer:-D

In order to find the reason for the name of the bar we need to go around 80 years back in time.

About 1910 Mr. Theo Vossen ran an establishment called "LA COUR ROYALE". Amongst his many customers were a lot of employees working at the National Bank of Belgium which still is situated around the corner. Those employees passed their time in the pub playing a dives game called "421". Before returning to the office, the employees played a quick last game and the one who lost was called the: "MORT SUBITE" or the sudden death.

The name became well known and when Theo Vossen moved to this actual address in 1928 he decided to call his pub: "AT THE MORT SUBITE". The same name as this own beers.

His sons and grandsons René and Jean-Pierre Vossen continued the tradition for more than 36 years. Today, the fourth generation of the Vossen family Olivier and Bernard, continuous to serve you these delicious Gueuze beers in the same establishment which also retains the original 1928 decor.
