One of the best bars or café's in the central Brussels after my taste is the "La Mort Subite" - The bar is one of the old brown café's as they call it down here.
La mort subite - "until the sudden death" is a place that is rich on the real flavor of Brussels. It reminds me of one of these places where they parked trains in the old days. The walls are yellow - I don't know if they are coloured that way or if it 75 years of smoke. It is truly a fantastic place and don't cheat yourself for a big big glas of Grimbergen Blonde - they taste more than wonderful here, but remember after number five you are on your own. These monster beers are really kicking:D The service is always kind, smiling, friendly and very quick. If you want to do what the locals do here, then order "a mixed" - it´s a plate with sausage and cheese choped in small pieces - and you take them with a toothpick and dip them in strong mustard with a large dash of peper. One thing you will see here, which I seldom see in Copenhagen - is women ordering beer after beer:-D |

About 100 years old and full of beers :) Aug 17, 2008
I was reminded about La Mort Subite by Christian (Chokk), who told me it is one of his favorite café's in Brussels. And yes, it is a really nice place indeed. Only thing I don't like about it is that you can smoke inside...
So La Mort Subite is a very old café, founded in 1910, and almost around for a century! It is always been known for it's beer and so is Belgium :) But even though it is a very typical place it isn't too touristy yet. Very much locals are to be found here, and so it is still a real Brussels place. You can try many different beers here, in a setting that is really quite unique. The interior hasn't been changed over the years, the walls are old and yellow and covered with mirrors and black and white pictures in frames. The ceiling is high and the room long. You can have a drink her at the old small wooden tables, but on the menu are Belgian snacks such as omelets as well. I would really recommend going here when in Brussels, because it is a place other than others, and it breaths the flair of the old days. When "Brussels was still a sparkling town", as sang in the Flemish song "Brussel" by Liesbeth List :) Part of the This blog is for all of you! travel blog |

We continued our walk in the city for some time before my friend insisted that we should go and visit the La Morte Subite which to him is a must when visiting Brussels. It is for him a must to sit there and enjoy a cold Grimbergen Blond and phone his friends back in Denmark and explain what he is doing. … 2nd day of Christmas in Brussels |
