La Magnolia Verona Reviews
Cheaper Option For Verona Jul 10, 2010
Stayed here almost as much through necessity as by choice. I had been to Verona last September and wanted to go back and get a better look. It was only when I started trying to book a hotel that it dawned that it was the middle of the opera season.
Looked at some of the chain hotels, but they all seemed to be located 3-4 km out towards the exhibition centre and I knew roughly the area we wanted to be staying, but without paying £250 per room :O.
This place is situated less than half a kilometer from the main train station, on a road just behind the junction at the Porta Nuova. If you are walking from the station just stay on the same side, keeping the Porta Nuova to your left, and cross over the main road, turn right on the next small street, then left and you're there. Easy !!! :)
Hotel has a secure entry system gate, and we had to get let in, but they give you the code once you've checked in. The 'office' was just a desk in the living room area, an area designed for people to lounge about.
Rooms were actually really nice, and our one concern had been the shared bathroom, but we had two rooms together and that was the extent of the sharing. Might not be a big issue for a lot of people, but different when you are travelling with kids.
At the end of the passage to our two rooms there was a screen you could close off to give it even more privacy.
Again, it was a small hotel, so not that many rooms to be sharing with anyway. Above the bed in the room was a picture of the ceiling in the Sistine Chapel, although on closer examination you saw it was a massive jigsaw puzzle that had been stuck to a board and put up on the wall :D
There was a TV in each of the rooms, as well as a large screen one in the lounge . No wifi, but there were two PC's you could use, one in the lounge and the other in the breakfast area.
Our main priority, initially, was getting to and from the Arena for the opera, and it is a fairly straight 15 minute walk down to there.
The other concern we had, was that the hotel backs right onto the railway line, but to be honest we never really noticed the trains, and by the time we got in just before 2am they had stopped anyway.
The breakfast, I'm told, consisted mostly of sweet pastries, that the Italians are so fond of,fresh orange juice and coffe but it seemed to go down well.
Had to hang about a bit to check out, as the guy who was doing that was also trying to serve the other guests breakfasts. Got to leave out rucksacks at the hotel while we spent the morning sightseeing around Verona.
