If you're driving, get there EARLY (for parking...most is free but that fills up quick and you're stuck paying to park at the garage up the hill near Prospect)! The cove has some great snorkel sites and the water can be up to 30-40 feet visability on a good day. There are some great animals to see, under and above water. Sea lions, pelicans, ground squirrels, girabaldi, lobsters, etc... The scuba diving is great just north of there at La Jolla Shores. They'll usually drop them off and pick them up for you at La Jolla Shores. From there you can paddle over to the cove in about 15 mins, a beautiful, relaxing ride.
As far as 'caves', they're more like carved out areas in the rock, not the cave you would imagine. If the surf is calm and the tide is low, you can carefully navigate through some of them, but if you've never been, I'd suggest getting a guide with the kayaks or snorkel tours to go in.

Near Prospect street in La Jolla is the big, wide ocean. The seals bask in the sun and there's a long walkway along the cost to stroll, jog or just take pictures at.
