La Iglesia de la Compania de Jesus
La Iglesia de la Compania de Jesus Arequipa Reviews
Stunning, ornate, dark and definitely the hidden jewel (pun intended) of Arequipa! Dec 04, 2013
Everyone who visits Arequipa thinks of the Catedral, the longest and largest in the country, and rightfully so. But hidden in the same city centre, literally across the square is this little gem. The Church isn't open the whole day. It closes in the afternoon and reopens at 3pm.
One running theme I noticed in this trip is that whilst Peruvian trips have the same kind of colour and aplomb as Spanish and Mexican churches, they also have more statue-esque paintings (three dimensional paintings) than their Spanish and Mexican counterparts.
Anyway back to this church - it's DARK! So prepare to shoot in Shutter mode and increase the time limit to a good enough figure to capture enough light. The altar, the side paintings and panelling, everything's worth it.
My favourite part of the church was forking out 4 Soles for the most amazing dome converted into museum I've seen in my life. It was a dome painted with pictures of Christ, fruit (!!) and Peruvian weapons (!!). Yes! All 3 together, and they merged so well!
This then leads to a very commercialised complex outside the church with paintings for sale and gasp..a coffee shop!
I'll highly recommend this church to anyone - it's really not too far. It looks rather plain (compared to the Catedral) from the outside but it's so not, on the inside!
