La Grotta Bar & Trattoria Riomaggiore Reviews
Cave Craving May 14, 2012
An enjoyed eatery in Riomaggiore, La Grotta (“The Cave”) is honestly built right into a rocky cliff. This makes for interesting indoor seating, though we opted to sit on the front porch, which was covered (even had plastic walls) with a couple space heaters. That was critical; because it was starting to get a bit chilly when we sat down to eat. Between the heaters and ability to accept credit cards (somewhat a rarity in Cinque Terre), we only hoped the food would follow suit.
And indeed it did. Kim and I shared a lovely seafood risotto, which had been sold short by the English menu we ordered from. Their translation described the dish as “flavored with fresh seafood” so we weren’t quite sure what that implied, but wow --- the steaming plate arrived overflowing with mussels, clams and shrimp, and it was delicious. Eric ordered shrimp in a tomato broth and was greatly relieved when the waitress handed him a handy wipe and told him to just use his fingers. Wanting to be polite he was already clutching a knife and fork.
Service was spotty, though nothing terrible, and a great finish. Kim wanted to sample sciacchetrà (shack-eh-tra), a sweet, local dessert wine made from dried grapes. Created nowhere but Cinque Terre, she and Eric got a glass and it was served with a plate of biscotti, the perfect pairing to conclude a wonderful meal and a wonderful day in Cinque Terre.
