La Cava de Lolo

La Cava de Lolo Barrio Escalante Reviews
Wine Spoken Here... Jan 16, 2013
Take a trip back in time, chill out with San Jose's finest wine list and be prepared to be completely blown away with classical music and Spanish antiquities.
La Cava de Lolo is Lolo's third and newest, most exquisite eatery in the capitol city of San Jose, and located in one of the inner city's most unique neighborhoods. Barrio Escalante is a very old and posh barrio, home to many restaurants, small shops, language schools, parks, etc. and is extremely well protected. While it is not possible to park directly in front of the restaurant, it is possible to park on the adjacent street and there are guards actively working on the block, so it is very secure.
On the door is a very subtle sign with a pawn in the middle. Chess lessons are held there once a week, thus the design of the sign. (Call for details on that). The wine list is like nothing else in the country; all major countries are well represented and the house reds are amazing. Any oenophile will think they have died and went to heaven. Food is light fare and perfectly in keeping with the overall tone of the place. Fine cheeses, imported salamis, local fresh-baked breads satisfy the palate without distracting from the nuances of the wines that are served with elegance and grace.
Musician, artist, sculptor, humorist and social visionary, Lolo himself is an experience as deep as the Barolos and Amarones. The music is decidedly classical, and the collection is as diverse and extensive as the wines themselves.
There simply is nothing else like La Cava de Lolo in Costa Rica, and if you've got some spare change and want a truly genuine Tico experience, this is decidedly the place to have it.
