La Casona de Don Jaime 2 & Suites HI Rosario Reviews
La Casona de Don Jaime May 11, 2016
I was slowly entering the rain spell that covered this part of Argentina. Coming to Rosario I already had 2 days of being wet and I needed just a bit of the break in the clouds and place to dry out. Prior research of the Rosario hostel scene showed up two Don Jaime hostels so I figured that they know what they are doing and reserved couple of days in Casona No2.Hostel is definitely centrally located, with main walking street two blocks away and stores and restaurants all around. It is on one of the main streets for buses, so it is easy to move around to distant locations or to the bus station which is some 16 blocks away.
This part of Rosario is made of beautiful old buildings with picturesque facades and the hostel building is not standing out of that picture. Two story, high ceiling nice house is effectively made into a functional hostel. Bottom floor features spacious reception area, and dormitories. On the second floor they have bunch of rooms for people that like more privacy or they got kicked out from the dormitory because thy snore …
Front part is made into small bar and hang out area which is far enough from the rooms so that sounds don’t disturb sleepers. Dorms have very large unisex bathroom and shower area. It is well designed, and there are enough stalls for 4 showers and few bathrooms. Shower is very pleasant, hot water and enough places to leave your cleaning products and dry stuff. Kitchen area is a bit down, probably in an add-on building in the back, and it is filled with tables to the point of uncomfortable. The hostel has free breakfast that is a sad little basket with couple bread pieces, some spreads, and coffee. Knowing this “free” breakfast style, I did prepare my food a bit differently with add-ons of fresh cheese, pate, nice mayo and tomatoes. Of course when in Argentina, you have to indulge in obscene amounts of good vine, and breakfast is good time and place to start…
Staff is very personal and helpful, English speakers, there are maps that they are giving away and you can ask about any directions. Rosario was a bit of surprise for me. I did not expect a city with so much class and good vibes. Coming from Cordoba which was total opposite of nice (aside of Jesuit Churches there is very little that Cordoba can show for), Rosario was very refreshing sight. Most of the center is crowned with beautiful architecture, restaurants are very good and there is food variety that would let you eat something else aside of meat. Really nice waterfront also has good restaurant choices and it is very lively.
Hostel was around 10$ per night which was good value. My dormitory had 6 beds which featured personal lights and places where to leave your small belongings. Large lockers are good and you’ll need to bring your own lock. I was a bit cold during the first night, but next night I got some blankets.
I kind of regretted that I could not stay longer in this place, but rain was creeping on me again and I had to meet some friends in Buenos Aires. Transport to the bus station was super cheap and easy with local public bus.
