The beautiful city of L'Aquila (which means Eagle in Italian) sits almost smack bang in the centre of Italy, surrounded by the stunning Apennine Mountains. The city centre, encased in medieval walls, offers up cobbled streets and narrow paths at every turn. Although popular as a holiday destination among Italians for hiking and skiing, this university town has yet to be fully discovered as part of the country's tourist trail.

Part of the Abruzzo region, L'Aquilla has a population of around 70,000 people, all of whom enjoy close proximity to a number of Roman ruins, monestaries, castles and even ski resorts.
