Kutai National Park Reviews
Kutai National Park Jul 05, 2011
Up in the northern part of Eastern Kalimantan you’ll find the national park of Kutai. The main reason people go there is to see orangutans. Unlike other national parks where you can see orangutans you won’t be guaranteed sightings at Kutai - but most people do see them and I certainly did.
The park is a bit away from the other attractions in Kalimantan hence it does get many visitors. With a bit of luck you will be the only one visiting the park when you go there - considering even in the busiest of months they only receive 75 guests during the month. And you should be sure not to have more than a few guests except your own group considering there are only two rooms available to stay overnight. Hence part of the going here is to enjoy the isolation in the jungle.
The park is one of the few remaining jungle area which is still left in East Kalimantan - in the rest of the province the jungle has given way to commercial farming and cities. Even here in the national park the jungle is under threat from illegal logging - and the authorities doesn’t seem to do very much in the way of protecting the area from the surrounding world.
The main thing to do in the park is to go trekking a bit in the jungle mainly searching for orangutans. The cute orangutans are certainly the main attractions of the park but there are other animals as well which is also nice to see. I got to see a few birds, and a giant lizard in addition to the orangutans.
