Probably the largest tourist resort in Indonesia, Kuta sits on the southern end of Bali, nestled in the shadow of the island and providing visitors with over five kilometers of pristine white beaches and some of the best surfing on the planet. Originally known as one of the three “Ks” back in the latter part of the 20th century—Katmandu, Khao San, and Kuta—the area has transformed out of its legendary backpacking status and into the 21st century as a mecca for the party animals of the world.

Despite the bombings in 2002 and 2005, the area has remained a prominent tourist destination. And while there's no doubt that the surfing and the nightlife are the primary reasons that the modern traveler comes here, the secret of what made Kuta so popular in the first place lie hidden in the jungle trails of Kalimantan and the other islands, long held as some of the best backpacking trails in the entire world.

Kuta is considered one of the best places to experience Indonesia on a budget. It is also one of the best places to go if you happen to be of the younger generation, because the entire atmosphere caters to the modern traveler. While the more seasoned adventurers might feel more comfortable in rugged mountains or ancient cities, Kuta is a cultural hotspot that boasts a nightlife that is just as lively as the waves that make the surfing so extraordinary, and while the area just around the resort is a mass of resorts, bars, nightclubs, and restaurants, the further north you go up the coast the more exclusive and less crowded things get. Or you can simply head into the heart of the island or one of the surrounding ones to get your fill of jungle exploration. Either way, Kuta is the perfect way to experience the Indonesian culture while at the same time taking in some amazing surfing and epic scenery.
