Peaceful Garden in Kurihama Aug 03, 2013
Free to enter and with inexpensive parking, Kurihama Flower World is a recommendable visit for those who wish for a peace and quiet stroll in a trail through the lush greenery. I was able to visit during one of its off days when all its adjoining facilities were closed (restaurant, ice cream stand, etc.). Even temporarily without these amenities, the steep walk felt calming. There is something about the tranquility of mother nature that muffles the traffic from the major highway nearby.

The trail is about 4000 meters with a wide variety of flowers and other botanical items. Some hedges are skillfully trimmed to represent animals and objects, while others are trimmed into things in which I can identify with.

The landmark that the visitor will come across is the 15 foot Godzilla, perched high on the hill within the flower world. Kurihama Flower World is child friendly and is equipped with a full playground. This trail also conveniently conjoins the ending of the passageway with the beginning. I would go again during a weekend or a busier season in order to fully enjoy the amenities, though the exhausting climb in a hot Japanese summer was well worth the picture-taking.

The "country of the flowers" Jun 03, 2009
Kurihama Flower World (or Kurihama Hana no Kuni in Japanese, literally meaning the country of the flowers), is not a very touristy spot. There's no website that I can find, information is scarce, and it's basically a giant field of flowers. But if you live in Yokosuka or anywhere else in the Muira peninsula, it's definitely worth checking out.

I went in early June when the poppies were blooming. An EXPANSIVE field of poppies, I couldn't help but feeling I was in "The Wizard of Oz" and the wicked witch would pop up at any minute. In the fall, cosmos bloom in their place. The park is actually quite large, and you can either walk the paths or have the "Flower-train" take you to the different portions. There's a huge playground as well for the kiddies, including a Godzilla slide. At the very end of the path there is an Instructional Herb garden that costs 500yen to go in. Since I tend to kill anything green, I opted to spend the money on an icecream cone instead.

Grant it, it's not the most exiting place (lots of kids in the playground and older people walking around), but it was nice for a walk and to take pictures of flowers. I definitely plan on going back for a picnic and to see the fall cosmos. The greenery and the flowers are a nice change from all the urban concrete!
