Kure Beach Overview

Wedged between Carolina Beach and Fort Fisher, the small village of Kure Beach (pop. 1,500) seems little more than a continuation of Carolina Beach. The easy atmosphere, replete white white sand beaches and plentiful restaurants won't let you worry what to call this nirvana.

The town's name is correctly pronounced CURE-ee, after its Danish founder. Although there aren't many attractions within the town limits, Fort Fisher is literally just past the city limits and it does carry the distinction of being the only American city bombed during WWII.

In 1943 a German u-boat lobbed three bombs towards the Dow plant located in Kure Beach to eliminate its production of bromide from seawater (used for aviaton fuel). The missiles missed badly, over-shooting their target and landing harmlessly in the Cape Fear River behind the town, but lends an interesting chapter in the town's history.
