nice hostel Jun 22, 2011
I stayed only one night there. I planned to take a train back home , but didnot get the ticket. so have to stay one night in kunming. then I checked on YHACHINA and find out cloudland youth hotel. made a call there then gottta know how to get there. it s very convenient, just catch 64bus from train station and walk a bit then I was there!

rooms there are very clean. stuff can speak good english.each room they have clockers, though I donot really need it. I stayed in a 8bed room. 30RMBper bed. It s really cheap in the downtown Kunming. the communal bathroom is also very clean and convenient to use. besides, I made some friends there. so... great time!

i lived 2 month in this hostel and it was really fun. it 's a good place with dorm and private room, bar-restaurant, bike rent ...

Guests can get loads of first hand information about traveling in the Mainland China.

Not as good as the hype suggests Nov 13, 2010
I stayed at the Kunming Cloudland Backpackers for a couple of nights. In my guidebook it came with a good recommendation and websites like Hostelworld also give it good reviews. It is also the “our pick” in the latest Lonely Planet. I found it a rather average place.

The pros: clean dorms, comfortable beds, beds that are actually big enough for a tall Dutch guy, two power sockets next to each bed (a rarity!), a small shelf next to the bed where you can put some items, personal locker, good bicycles on offer, cheap travel services, good, cheap, coffee with discounts for refills.

The cons: toilets are not the cleanest, hot water is unstable, not enough showers and toilets in general (my room was on the fourth floor, the nearest toilets are on the third), staff seems seriously overworked and weary of demanding travellers, rather iffy wi-fi and internet, a bit far from the centre (especially restaurants), no train station pick-up.

The place has a nice vibe. It has a pool table, table tennis and darts in the courtyard, with regular tournaments being held. The bar/restaurant/common area is rather small - too small for the amount of people that can stay here.

Had this been the first hostel I stayed at in China, then my review would probably have been more positive, but compared to the other hostels I found this to have quite a few shortcomings.

You are right, the Cloudland is mostly a testament to how good other hostels in China are. I'm in Malaysia now, which is a HUGE step down from the quality in found in China.

Didn't see many restaurants amidsts the music stores, but the old people singing in the nearby park was wonderful indeed, thanks for reminding me (though you do see this all over China)

"Yey! Cloudland"... and judging by the photo it looks like we may even have stayed in the exact same room :) Good, fair review (even down to the detail of lovely but super-harassed staff!). There is a good street for real local food just around the corner (forget the name - the one with all the musical instrument shops on it) and also, if you're lucky in the evenings wonderful groups of traditional local singing and music chorales performing on the corner of Xin Wen Lu road just down the way. You're also right in that fine though Cloudland may be, its testament to the quality of China's relatively recently blossomed hostel network that there are many, many fine options available - though I fear not in Kunming.

A piece of paradise in Kunming May 10, 2010
I stayed 3 nights there.

There were no room available, so they let us sleep in the bar, 2 nights for free, one for 15yuan!

The staff is very welcoming and helpful. they were really willing to help us planning our trip. They know well about the region. They can find you the cheapest bus or plane tickets

The tibetan-style bar is very pretty. They serve both european and chinese food, the food is good and inexpensive.

The hostel is located in a quiet and small street. It may be hard to find though, and its not located in the very city centre (but not that far - 5 to 8 min by taxi)

It s a very international place, were backpackers can easily meet. The walls of the hostel are covered by short messages and drawings left by the travellers.

They have a nice terrace at the 2nd floor from where you can take a sun bath while drinking a cocktail.

Modern, friendly and stylish with a relaxed feel. Jun 03, 2009
Modern, friendly and stylish with a relaxed feel. This is probably the best way to sum up this hostel.

We were collected from the train station free of charge and dropped off at the door of the hostel. It is tucked away off the main ring road in a small street so it is very peaceful.

As you enter the cosy courtyard, you notice the pool table and table tennis table, plus lots of tables and chairs to relax in the afternoon sunshine.

The staff speak excellent English and are very keen to help with your plans around China. Nothing is too much for them.

Our room, on the 4th floor, was spotlessly clean, well decorated, modern and comfortable. There was no air conditioning or a fan, but the windows opened wide. The hostel encourages 'graffiti' on the walls in the stairwells - so you can leave your mark!

The shared bathrooms could do with some modernisation but they are functional and mostly clean. There are wash basins on the stairs between each floor.

There is free wifi and computers available at the hostel, but it is cripplingly slow. Wifi is not available in the rooms either.

The lounge area is very comfortable and you are guaranteed to meet other travellers while watching one of their hundreds of movies, chilling out in the bar, or having a meal.

The food is delicious, carefully prepared and good value. They have a wide selection of dishes, plus high quality coffees.

This hostel is one of the friendliest I have come across in the world and is highly recommended!
