Kumasi, Ghana
Kumasi Catering Rest House - My sleeping arrangement to escape the bed bugs and insects in my room! Had to order from Amazon and delivered to a fellow hotel guest in Oregon...but without this thing, I wouldn't have survived my stay!
Kumasi Catering Rest House - Very non-vegetarian, large portion that I ate once a week to catch up on calories. Still lost lots of weight.
Kumasi Catering Rest House - Military museum across the street.
Kumasi Catering Rest House - Red red. I could eat this...but goodness -- so much fried food!
Kumasi Catering Rest House - Papaya - my survival tactic. The tricky part is you had to wait until they turned orange to eat them -- I nearly broke off my tooth trying to eat one while it was still green.
Kumasi Catering Rest House - the center of town just across the street.
Kumasi Catering Rest House - critter friends, this guy ran out of my room

I wish I could give this place more stars, and they really did try, but I can't give them more than the 2 for the following reasons:

1) Bedbug infestation - week 1

2) Lack of food options for a vegetarian -- took me 6 weeks to figure out how to order something more than eggs and a side salad (usually it doesn't take that long to order something)

3) 10 = number of days I went without the included breakfast, most of the time because they didn't make it in time for me to run to work. For someone staying long term in a place without a kitchen, this is horrible. I also lost 10 pounds because of not being able to eat adequately.

4) Lapsidaisical about maintenance. My airconditioner worked, but most of the time I couldn't get my water to stop dripping in the bathroom. Such a waste!

Anyway, I wish KCRH was a bit more pleasant of a stay. They did move my room in the first 4 days when I realized I was getting eaten alive by bed bugs. I managed to buy a bug hammock that kept me safe the rest of the time (note to self: never travel without this!).

I found that access to food here was horrible and I could not depend on the staff to make a breakfast even if I ordered it a day in advance.

It is actually otherwise a very nice facility that is very close to where I worked, but the experience was negative because of the multitude of mishaps. I can now laugh about them, but at the time, with 45 degree weather, they were abominable.

You can do better KCRH. When I come back to Kumasi, I hope that it will improve enough that I could stay there again!
