Kucuk Beyoglu
Kucuk Beyoglu Reviews
Secretly very famous.. Aug 13, 2009
There is no real address to Kucuk Beyoglu because mostly it's almost like a district on its own right and the name means 'Little Beyoglu' mimicking the whole Beyoglu with its many bars and clubs.
Even though it has a single name (as in 'Lets go to KB') the place is actually made up of many bars squeezed into a couple of buildings. But mostly people prefer sitting on the narrow street which serves as a huge porch for all the bars and usually you don't even know which bar you re being served from. There's moderately loud punk rock music during the day and really loud punk rock at nights. When trying to get there you'll probably feel like you've taken a wrong turn because the way to KB is a somewhat dark and narrow alley with a building site on the right (as I'm writing this review). And just when you decide to turn back you'll start hearing music and at the end of the street, when you turn left you'll suddenly see a huge crowd of people filling up the whole street full of graffiti and colorful lights and fake plants... You can sit on the tables that has a reserved sign. This is very common in cafes and bars around Istiklal, to have reserved signs on all the tables no matter how informal the place is. As you approach the table the waiter would probably grab the sign and tuck it away. The tables are NOT really reserved. But you may want to go there before 7 or 8 PM if you want to find a place to sit on the weekends because it can get really crowded. There are halls and a big terrace you can sit in, in the buildings too but I've always felt like the real KB is on the street. They have an awesome cocktail menu and the prices are no worse than what you can find in any other bar on Istiklal. The only problem is there is no description of what is in the drink. Though they have witty and creative names like 'goygoy' or 'the tumor in the brain'. The waiters and waitresses are also hired for how cute they are, so the service is not so perfect. Oh, also notice the tattoo of the number pi on the inner forearms of the waiters and bartenders... Even though it looks like a creepy cult sign on most the waiters, I think it's not; Kucuk Beyoglu is also the younger brother of Cafe Pi. Which you should visit if you like KB. |
