Ksar d''Ait Ben Haddou Reviews
Must See Nov 07, 2010
Ait Ben Haddou is a "ksar" (fortified village) located in south-central Morocco. 30km's west of Ouarzazate en-route to Marrakech.
The collection of fortifications and dwellings is built on the incline of a barren hillside and was originally a stronghold defend the inhabitants of this trading post between the Sahara and Marrakech. It is an excellent example of local town architecure from the medieval age. It is said that families are still living here to this day, almost as they did 800 years ago.
This picturesque collection of buildings and walls has been the backdrop of many, major motion pictures, including 'Lawrence of Arabia', 'The Mummy', 'The Jewel of the Nile' and 'Gladiator', among others. There are several hotels in the immediate areas along with a few cafe's.
It is generally considered that it is a "must see" stop if travelling in this region. Ait Ben Haddou is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
You'll have to pay maybe 20dh to park your car if you have a rental. Try to get here early or late in the day (when the lighting and colour can be striking) and there are less bus tours milling around and spoiling the mood. There is a lot of walking required to explore the upper reaches of the ksar, or even onto the summit of the hill, where there are some interesting ruins.
...strength & honour...
