Apart from few churches, we have seen everything in Krakow that we wanted to see. And yet, we got a full day to spend here. That is because we first thought of going to Chestochowa, but finally didn't do so. Luckily, the weather is on our side today, so we can just stroll around a bit and enjoy our last day here.We start with a walk past the three churches we still wanted to see: the Dominican church, the Saint Franciscan basilica and the Saint Peter and Paul church. Looking back to it now, t...

Today we had a picnic at Zakrzowek, which used to be a quarry, but now is just some cliffs with an extremely nice view of Krakow on one side, and a lake to the other.

I randomly met up with a
group of Californians and two Polish girls who worked at the tourist
information booth. The Polish girls wanted to take us to a local sandwich place
that was apparently the best bargain food in town, so, being the poor
backpackers that we were and resolved not to spend another night eating
kielbasa, we decided to go along.
We arrived at a small kiosk set up in the middle of a tiny
piazza. The kiosk was unremarkable except for the fact that there was a hug...

I've just checked in in our hostel after walking so many miles. And what did I do? Ran to the computer of course! I sent two SMS to Wayne and he did not reply though he told me to ring him, he was supposed to see me at the station. I think I saw him though on the streets with a green shirt and some shorts but I did not approach him. Could be him, could be not.
So I decided to look for the hostel and went straight there as I do not feel like I can not rely on that dude. Finally found th...

I was never able to find a couch to surf in Krakow. I think it was the poor timing of hitting a long holiday weekend, where most of the locals left town. This left me without a guide and wandering the streets of Krakow with the rest of the tourists. I do feel I missed out because of this, but what I did see of the city, I really liked. It's a great mix of insanely old architecture and very modern/ hip shops and people. The streets are littered with tourists and pigeons. It's such a top touris...

We oversleept so we had Aleks poking us on our stomachs on the morning, telling us to get up. I really wasn't ready with my bags and stuff so I don't remember where I put my mobile. We rushed to the trainstation to catch our train that left at 9:30. At the train I started to panic about my mobile phone, really. My mobile is like my second best friend, I have everything in it. It really sounds pathetic, but I know that many of u r the same, but u'r to ashamed to confess it! :PAnyways, while we...

For these last days I've met a lot of foreigners who were traveling to Poland just to see Krakow, and because Warsaw was, more or less, on their way, they'd stayed there for few days. But, in the end, they final direction was Krakow. Good for them. Krakow is my favourite place in Poland. This city is so rich in culture and, when I think about it, bohemian atmosphere comes to my mind. When I was little I was traveling to Krakow just to see Wawel and some architecture, and I thought that there...

We headed into Krakow today and picked up a local guide. She explained that Krakow was not destroyed like Warsaw was in WW II. She said that the Nazi's had headquarters in Krakow including at the castle on Wawel Hill and that they liked the city and as a result they didn't destroy it as they did other cities. We went to the old Jewish section of the city and there were between 7-10 synagogues in this area alone and some were still in use. The guide pointed...

Well, my final hours in Europe. Ieva and I ate breakfast at a real dive-ey place, then got a cab to the main train station. I would get a train to the airport, and she to Warszawa & on to Lithuania. We got there early, and had a few hours to wait, and it was really an odd feeling, in that month, I had become accostomed to living out of a bag, and not knowing where my next night might be, and now after a 9 hour flight, I'd be back to "normal life" ... back to work. ...

In honor of Halloween, I went to visit the concentration camps at
Auschwitz and Auschwitz-Birkanau today. After all, what could be
scarier? That is, what aside from the disturbing trend of french
maid costumes for toddlers? The camps were nothing like what I thought they would be. For one thing, they just looked...nice.
If you didn't know better, you would think they were camp lodges or
forest ranger homes or something. And when it's all sunny and

Today was another travel day, but before we left
Krakow we did some more shopping in the Cloth Hall. We ate lunch at our favorite restaurant in the square, Pizza
Dominium. After lunch, we packed and
cleaned up our apartment. We turned in
our key and left for the airport via taxi.
The airport was chaotic with extremely long and unorganized lines, but
we actually made it thru all the lines and security without too much delay and
easily made our flight. We ar...

Fellow blogreaders,Today was my second day in Krakow. I've now seen almost the whole city. There are many old structures worth a visit, especially the big castle on a hill. But al this beauty brings in a big drawback: toerists and commerce! The structures are beautifull but when you want to see the inside, you have to pay.. for every structure. But this didn't spoil my day. Another nice thing about Krakow and poland in general, are the prices, the're low :)Tomorrow I will leave for Kosice, Sl...

It was dark outside, and with the drizzle, the streets of Krakow didn’t look particularly inviting. We headed towards the Old Town, a place noted for its bars and restaurants. After only a hundred yards or so, Jodie stopped walking. “I don’t like this. I’m not getting good vibes.”
“What do you mean?” I said.
“Look!” gestured Jodie, water dripping from her hair. “Everything’s dark and dingy. It seems…unfriendly.” We wandered on.

My final day here I finally made it to the Krak Mound, which is basically a pile of dirt dating back to the 7th Century, the origin of which is unknown. Legend is it that it is the burial site of Krakow's founder. What it really is though is a great spot to overlook Krakow. The walk down there was through the Jewish district, into parts I haven't yet explored, and then up the mound for a rest and a gaze of the city. It is not a site that many venture to given the few d...
