Kopan Monastery Kathmandu Reviews
Beautiful and quiet monastery near Kathmandu May 05, 2011
Kopan is a beautiful Tibetan monastery on the outskirts of Nepal. It's worth a visit to see the nice compound with all it's statues, stupa and decorations. Or to sit down for a day, relax and read or write. The monastery also has an extensive library and a small shop with a lot of interesting books on Buddhism.
The taxi driver will bring you to the monastery on top of the hill. This is the main ground and all the monks live here. There is a separate place for all the nuns, further down the hill. If you're interested and ask the reception, I'm pretty sure they will show it or give you directions to the place.
Kopan also offers retreats and courses for Western people interested in Buddhism. From short ten day introduction courses to month long retreats. It's an amazing, life changing experience, to live in a monastery for a couple of days. With no communication to the outside world and great food! What else could you wish for when escaping the busyness of daily life.
A short visit is very easy to combine with a visit to the Boudhanath (Boudha) stupa, but staying a little bit longer is highly recommended. There is a small shop for simple food & drinks if you do not want to take your own.
