A story of how we came to the train station hotel...
Gulnara GH... Rang several times to reserve and no answer. Turned up and full. Helpful lady said she'd phone a neighbour, but the man of the house was been a prick for no apparent reason. After finding out i was British they said the price was $30 at their friends and this was just for a bed for Julia and I. When we said it was too much, he started calling us tightarses and saying the British Pound was so strong and i should just pay! We left a bit gobsmacked how brash and rude the guy was, the woman was nice. A note on this place, they charge everyone different amounts ranging from $10-$15 on a whim, seems bullshit to be honest.
Hotel Hadra: Well the rooms arent as bad as LP says but boy is the service! They now charge 20000 for a double with no working outside toilet facilities. For a room with a toilet and running hot tap its 26000. There are NO showers at all, but they still try and get this, madness! The staff are some of the rudest i've ever encountered, best avoided!
Ali GH: No answer, but i really didnt want to stay here, too many stories of wife abuse, trying to get into single female travellers rooms in the night, overcharging and been a drunk.
Ended up in SAM BUH for the first night. It cost $35 but it was our only choice. On the upside it was clean, friendly, nice breakfast, located next to Turkmen embassy and had a great shower.
TRAIN STATION HOTEL... Next day we rang and rang the train station and got them to reserve a room for us whilst we were at the Turkmen embassy. We called every hour to make sure they wouldnt give up the room and its the steal of the century. For $20 we have a double with air con and massive bathroom with hot water. But the real amazing part is theres a huge living room with sofa, arm chairs, table, TV etc, its amazing! Having pretty much dealt with all the budget places i can say this place wins hands down, its incredible, but thats why its always full! If you are stuck, hang around as people check out at all hours and it really helps if you speak Russian there!
