Koh Samui Vacation Guide
Located seven hundred kilometers south from Bangkok in the Surit Thani Province, Ko Samui is the second largest island in the Gulf of Thailand. During the late 1970's, the island became a tropical haven for globetrotting back-packers. Inexpensive bungalows sprinkled beautiful beaches lined with paradisaical white sands, coconut palms, and clear-blue seas.
Since the opening of the airport in 1989 (which is an incredibly different airport to any other - it is a must see!), tourists from around the world continue to flock to the same easy-going paradise beaches of Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut, Big Buddha, and others. It is home to well known Hin Ta and Hin Yai (Grandmother and Grandfather Rocks), the Mumified Monk, and many beautiful treks through this fascinating island. A full range of accommodation is available from low budget bungalows to luxury hotels and condominiums.
The approximately ten-square-mile island is easily accessible from Bangkok directly by short flight, or an overnight train or luxury bus to Surit Thani to connect with a regularly scheduled ferry service. This wonderful island you will share with plenty of tourist. There is a great market to explore. If you are looking for something more peaceful take a boat to Ko Tao.
