It has been a few years now, but one nice, economical trek was to the Tibet border. It was a four-hour bus ride from Kathmandu to Bharabisi, where the main road ended at that time. From there, we hiked for seven hours along the steep and winding Bhote Kosi River gorge. The dirt track was just wide enough for one vehicle and led us to Kodari which was little more than a few local wooden houses at the border and the people living there were happy to put us up.

We stood on the south end of 'Friendship Bridge' and traded glances with the Chinese guard a hundred feet away, on the other end. The small soldier, in brown uniform, stood at rigid attention, boldly boasting the red star on his Chairman Mao hat. During the cold war days, that was a memorable sight! He watched us intently; as curious of us as we of him. That crossing might even be open now-days.
