Koala Adventure Island Resort South Molle Island Reviews
shabby splendor in paradise Dec 11, 2012
The Koala Adventure Island Resort is the only "operating" resort on South Molle Island. It used to be a five star property back in the eighties, but various tropical storms tore the place apart. Only a fraction of it is open now, and mostly to backpackers.
Not all the rooms and bungalows are open for use. Along the beach, there are still plenty of abandoned and torn down bungalows. My guess is that they use only those that were not too badly damaged. And of course all the public spaces have been rebuilt.
We get a room on the second floor of a block facing the ocean. It's a nice and spacious room with a clear eighties feel to it. The decoration is a tropical style from years gone by. There are two beds, a desk with mirror and a tv. There's both individually controlled airco and a fan and there's also a fridge and a kettle with coffee and tea making facilities.
The bathroom is really spacious too and has apart from a toilet and sink also a bath tub annex shower. It all looks very nice at first sight, shouldn't it be so that the room is downright filthy and very worn down. There's dust and dirt everywhere and it's clear that the people running the resort are not big on hygiene.
The tub in the bathroom is so filthy that I hardly dare go stand in it to shower and the shower head is nearly coming off the wall. But there are amenities such as soap, shampoo and conditioner. On one hand the luxury, on the other hand the place is in ruins... There's no hairdryer in the bathroom, but it can be obtained from the reception in exchange of a thirty dollar deposit.
Next to the reception, there's the nice open air pool. On the other side there's the bar and in the far back there's the buffet restaurant used for breakfast and dinner. Although dinner... The resort staff prepared what our tour crew had actually BROUGHT to the island. The only food they do prepare themselves are the burgers and sandwiches at the lunch cafe.
Since this is a resort, there are all sorts of activities one can participate in during the day. It starts at 9.30 with fish feeding. Then there is a hike up to Spionkop, the vantage point of the island. Allegedly this is one of the best hikes in all of Queensland and I can attest that it is a really beautiful walk with amazing views!
Between 12 and 14 hours the cafe is open for lunch. Then in the afternoon there are coconut games and bird feeding.
At night time the bar opens and between 5 and 7 PM they have a happy hour with a cocktail of the week for a mere 8 dollar.
After nine, there is still evening entertainment. On the first night there were silly games, on the second night there was karaoke. The idea is to keep people at the bar and sell drinks.
Koala Adventure Island is a good enough place to spend a day or two to enjoy the beauty of the Whitsundays and get involved in all sorts of activities without breaking the bank. You need to get over the run down appearance of the place, because the island in itself really is beautiful and definitely worth a stay.
The place does have a lot of potential though, for someone willing to invest.
