Ko Phayam Vacation Guide
About 2 hours with the slow boat, or half an hour in a speed boat from from Ranong, will take you to Ko Phayam. It is a small island of some 20 square kilometer in the Andaman Sea. There are no cars on the island, all transport is done by scooters and the occasional mini-tractor which is the only way to deliver fresh water bottles to the resorts that are scattered around the island. There are only a few hundred natives living on the island, working the cashewnut- coconut and banana plantations. There is no electricity, though many resorts use small generators to supply some light and in some cases even airconditiong to their guest. Bamboo huts as cheap as $10 to small brick villas for $50 a night. Do not sleep in a resort close to any of the bars, because the brawl will keep you awake until late at night.
