Ko Phayam Overview

About 2 hours with the slow boat, or half an hour in a speed boat from from Ranong, will take you to Koh Phayam. It is a small island of some 20 square kilometer in the Andaman Sea. There are no cars on the island, all transport is done by scooters and the occasional mini-tractor which is the only way to deliver fresh water bottles to the resorts that are scattered around the island. There are only a few hundred natives living on the island, working the cashewnut- coconut and banana plantations. There is no electricity, though many resorts use small generators to supply some light and in some cases even air-conditiong to their guest. Bamboo huts as cheap as $10 to small brick villas for $50 a night. Do not sleep in a resort close to any of the bars, because the brawl will keep you awake until late at night.
