HISTORIC KNARESBOROUGH

Monday, September 8, 2008

After a full day of sight-seeing in the Yorkshire Dales, we ( Hans and I, Sue (Suet), June (Poons), Angie (Angiebabe) and Sue (Suvanki), were getting hungry. We stopped in the lovely town of Knaresborough and found a Chinese Restaurant, where we all had a bite to eat.

KNARESBOROUGH is in North Yorkshire, 16 miles from York.

This lovely town, with a beautiful crag-tip setting on a gorge of the River Nidd, has much to offer visitors. Sights in the town include the remains of Knaresborough Castle (circa 1100) and Mother Shipton's.

The main pic is of the gorgeous view you see of the River Nidd and the Railway Bridge. It's so picturesque with all the little boats which are available for rent.

I have only visted North yorkshire once, but not Knaresborough. The small towns 'up' there are most attractive.

A real jigsaw town Nov 03, 2011
Sorry I have no photos of Knaresborough but you may well know it anyway from jigsaw pictures. if not, you will at least gather that the town makes a really striking picture with its viaduct scenically overlapping the gorge of the river Nidd.

Knaresborough is not in either of Yorkshire's national parks but still attracts many visitors. The castle and a church date from the 14th century; a 17th century chemist's shop can be seen in the market square; however probably most tourists are drawn by the petrifying well, where there are always articles of clothing being gradually turned to stone by the dripping water and Mother Shipton's well Mother Shipton was a 15th century prophetess who fretold many modern events with great accuracy. However her reputation finds it hard to withstand the fact that the world still exists after she predicted its demise.
